Camano Island voters apparently approve permanent library

Originally published Apr. 22, 2014

Camano Island voters apparently have approved funding for a a permanent library.

The April 22 Special Election on Proposition 1 ballot measure asked voters whether they were willing to fund a permanent library on Camano Island through a $2.3 million, 10-year library bond levy. With an incomplete vote count on Monday evening, the measure was passing with 62 percent. The vote required 60 percent approval to pass and the final vote count will be certified on May 6.

The most up-to-date vote counts on Proposition 1 will be available on the Island County Auditor’s elections web site

The Camano Island Library advisory board and Sno-Isle Libraries sought a voter decision on a 10-year general obligation bond to cover all capital costs associated with purchasing, remodeling and opening a 4,900-square-foot library within the former Islander’s Restaurant building at Terry’s Corner.

Library bond funds also will reimburse the library district for the costs of purchasing the building in mid-2013. The purchase kept the building from becoming unavailable as the property began moving into foreclosure.

This was the second vote for a permanent Camano Island library. In August 2013, voters approved creation of a special taxing district but failed to approve the library bond levy by a narrow margin.

The temporary pilot library—located at Terry’s Corner near the permanent library site—is scheduled to close at the end of April.

that magic threshold into a library, we change their lives forever, for the better.
